Sunday smog…

Wood fire smog in Launceston today is no different from the 1960's smogs in Manchester and London, 1970's stink that was Los Angeles

The wood fire smog in Launceston today is no different from the 1960’s smogs in Manchester and London, then later the 1970’s and 80’s stink that was Los Angeles. The only difference is that the governments in both the U.K. and  California realised that the smog that ‘progress’ had created cost the community more in health costs than the value of the industry that generated it. Industry and in the case of California the automobile manufacturers were told to clean up thier polluting products with stringent emissions controls. This rethink of the classic Yank tank was also prompted by an oil crisis that in many ways was caused by American conspicuous consumption, support of Israel and total denial of statehood for Palestine.

In Launceston we have no such excuses it’s now 2018 Governments pay mere lip service to harmful pollution, then pick up the tab for the unnecessary health costs. The only way around this conundrum is for a complete rethink of heating systems the costs and the suppliers of the power. Gas in some areas may be an answer but in the long term homes have to be retrofitted to become passive solar attractive and using batteries and or electric storage heaters for the times when the sun doesn’t shine…

Roof tops in South Launceston…

Roof tops in South Launceston Lots of clouds but no rain

Roof tops in South Launceston Lots of clouds but no rain. This certainly seems like a regular pattern and one for no small concern. There was quite a good article outlining the dilema that faces Tasmania in relation to water and energy in the Mercury last week.

Having only lived in Tasmania for little over a year I wonder if I am qualified to comment further but the problems facing us at the present time are so fundamenal that anyone and everyone concerned needs to make their voice heard because the state government seems bereft of long term solutions. The fact is we are an island and as such we have to be as self sufficient in all our basic needs as it is possible to be and right now we are not, we are in what only can be describe as a mess and our government can only be described as moribund.

Solar panels in Kings Medows…

Solar panels in Kings Medows

The owner of Tasmanian Chainsaws and Mowers in Launceston has a lot of common sense and solar panels. With the main power link to the mainland broken solar will be helping out Tas Hydro and all Tasmanians alike in these times of disruption.
Western Australia now has the notoriety of being in the position where more Roof Top Solar power is generated than comes from power generating stations! As a result the WA government is loosing revenue and guess what, Barnett the premier doesn’t like it, so home owners are actually being penalised for having RTS. Further Barnett the silly has allowed Synergy the states power company to re-write the regulations to actively discourage folks from using RTS.
A good friend of mine has 2.4 Kw on his roof and wants increase to 5kw  but he is not allowed because his new panels will be a different COLOUR from the originals. Now how stupid is that!  This is how far petty pea brained politicians will go to make common sense installation of alternate energy difficult in the sad state of W.A. Its not what one would call a liberal attitude. Protection of coal royalties and generators aside Barnetts actions to discourage roof top solar is just not in the interest of Western Australians or any other Australian for that matter…
