A new family in the first basin…

A-new-family-in-the-first-basin

A delightful surprize greeted my evening walk around the Basin last night a new family of Australian swans has hatched and taken up residence. Five little cygnets were busy eating the duckweed growing around the edge of the basin. We will follow their progress over the next few months…

The Quadrant Mall at Christmas Time…

THE QUADRANT MALL IN LAUNCESTON TASMANIA - No cars just beautifully maintained and restored Edwardian and Vitorian buildings

The Quadrant shopping precinct Launceston Tasmania. No cars just beautifully  maintained and restored Edwardian and Victorian buildings. In Perth W.A. multinationals and sheer bloody greed have flattened and ripped the heart out of what was once an interesting townscaped and city.  It is a continued pleasure to amble round Launceston and see the old next to the new, to see the difference and excentricities of architects and builders past. Please let it remain so…

On the streets in Launceston: Watcha Looking at?

On the streets in Launceston: Watcha Looking at?

Love it of hate it street art has been with us since the days of ancient Egypt and Greece. Roman society was particularly creative when political and gender issues arose. Indeed the derogatory term graffiti is derived from Latin. Having looked and walked through some of Melbournes inner city lane in the recent past it is very evident that some of the most creative artists around use walls as thier  canvas. Some of these artists have migrated to galleries and are commanding a lot of respect from the visual arts community and the income that goes with it.

Fire in the Gorge…

Fire in the gorge

Fire chopper in the gorge

Spot fires in the gorge

A few photos taken this evening a fire on the Trevallyn side of the first basin. The chopper made many runs over the course of an hour that I watched this ever more common aspect of Tasmanian life. While these photographs do not prortray a very dramatic scene the like of which we have witnessed in Victoria recently let it not be forgotten that just over the top of that hill there are hundreds of homes with anxious people relying on these men who fight fires for us. Thanks guys, you do a remarkable and dangerous job…

Quite a bit more than a garden shed…

Quite a bit more than a garden shed

I have looked at this building many times as I drive or sometimes walk down to the town centre. Its interesting kind of like an architects practice shot at a building that should evolve into a larger project. If this was the case he’s in good company Frank Lloyd Wright had a go at a few like that and I would venture to say that there are many others who have done the same thing.  What ever the story this is an interesting building, small buildings fascinate me… They always have!

An unknown duck…

Unknown duck...

There are a pair of these ducks swimming around the first basin a little bit larger than a wood duck with an arbitrary splash of white feathers around its neck. I have no idea what specie they are but they seem very content paddling around the basin all day…
